A Little Snow...I LOVE It!
FINALLY, the snow and cold temperatures have arrived. I was lying in bed Sunday morning and just listening...there was a quietness (no car traffic noise from the Interstate); I knew that the weather man was right snow had arrived!! The cold temperatures have finally ended the Asian beetle sneak in the door plague. Now we can vacuum up the remaining beetles that are crawling on the walls and feel good about no more coming in! The Asian beetle is really harmless (except for the stink they freely share when bothered) and just a nuisance.
Asian Lady Beetle, Harmonia axyridis: The small, dark "M" is an identifying mark. They are a nuisance, flying in your face as you open the door and sneaking inside for an overwinter stay.
Today will be a good day for window watching and baking and staying warm!

This Asian Beetle is not a native to Kentucky, but from Asia. The first recorded in Kentucky was in Hickman County in 1992. They appear to have few natural enemies. If they are bothered, the beetles secrete a foul smelling yellowish fluid from their leg joints. IT DOES STINK! Soon it will turn cold and they will no longer be lingering at the door and the lucky ones will be back for another year of aphid catching.
