In the 1950's my mom started growing a shamrock with white flowers. Through the years she cared for it and even shared starts with others. A couple of years ago she died, now I am the keeper of the shamrock. In today's local paper an article was written up about the shamrock. I thought it would be interesting to look into this beautiful indoor/outdoor plant.
Here are several photos of my gifted shamrock (oxalis)...
The shamrock is an attractive and easy houseplant to grow. As a houseplant, place in the direct sun when in bloom and in a cool spot. When the temperature goes above 75 degrees, the plant could go into dormancy. My mom always said to keep the soil barely moist and let it dry out between watering. When the plant is growing, give it some foliage plant fertilizer (I use the small sticks). Sometimes the plant's leaves will turn yellow and it will look like it is dying. My mom said to cut it back, but still give it a little water. This would be a good time to also cut back on the fertilizing. The article in the paper said to place in a cool dark location when foliage begins to yellow. When new leaves sprout out, just resume watering and put back in a sunny place. In the garden plant in an area that is partially sun and shade. (I've never raised them outside). |

My mom, Millie, was a lover of nature and animals. She was a kind and gentle person. In 1992, she came to live with us. We put a small trailer behind our house, which gave each the privacy needed. Later when she was not able to get out much, we planted a wildflower garden near her front room window. She would relax in her favorite chair and watch the birds, flowers, and garden. As a young girl, Millie would take lined paper and draw the things she loved. First she would use a pencil and then later go over it in pen.
