A Time For Everything
Every season I love to watch as each flower, shrub and tree bloom in their own order. The first are the gentle weeds, like the henbit (member of the mint family), violets, dandelions, bittercress, sneezeweed and lots of wild mustard (has a peppery taste). Wild garlic looks like tiny onion plants. They grow bulbs underground and have small green, hollow stems that grow out of the bulb. Wild garlic can be eaten, but it has a strong taste.
The Plena Bush comes alive with white flowers, purple flowers flow on the Redbud Tree, pink and creme large tulip flowers on the Tulip Magnolia bring an added brilliance to the yard.
This week it is the Lilac Bush's turn to shine and smell sweet! Also it time for the Dogwood Trees to be in bloom. The dogwood trail opens today! It will be a beautiful day for a drive.
Also the herbs are coming to life after a mild winter...chives, lavender, thyme, rosemary, mint, and oregano have all made it and are even ready to pick. The collard greens also made it through the winter and have bolted. The flowers will be perfect for a spring bouquet or even added to a salad.
Unfortunately, the bluebird eggs did not make it! Last week I noticed that the bluebirds stopped showing up. So I opened the door and peeked in. All the eggs were gone! After looking closer, I found the 4 eggs on the bottom of the box (one was broken). The birds must have realized the eggs were not fertile and built another nest on top of the eggs. I gently removed the nest and eggs. The nest was then placed back. We have had lots of freezing nights this spring, so I think that was the problem. The bluebirds are still close by in the tree and will occasionally take a peek. Hope they use it another time.
Our yard is busy with changes in this season called spring. Have a good week! We will be busy putting in new windows :)
